Mashed-note indie-pop never goes entirely out of style (see Go Sailor, Tiger Trap, Cub, etc.) and Grass Widow are among the sub-genre's most recent and convincing champions. But don't you dare label this San Francisco-based trio twee or cuddle-core: There's an unyielding stridency to its poly-harmonies and coiled guitar motifs that's more about forging on than crying into bedroom pillows. Dope secret weapon alert: The drummer's steez is sick, and is possibly more capable of ending you than anything else Grass Widow gets up to.
