Stand-up mostly took a holiday during Tenacious D's criminally oversold Festival Supreme on the Santa Monica Pier a few weeks ago. Resembling humor's undertaker with a terrifying comb-over, Neil Hamburger told the awful jokes (“Why did the firemen fill their truck with piss and liquid shit? Because it was an Arcade Fire”) that comprise his shtick and moaned apposite songs like "Please Ask That Clown to Stop Crying" and the Bee Gees’ "I Started a Joke." Tim Heidecker and Awesome Show partner Eric Wareheim, meanwhile, assumed their Pusswhip Banggang band persona with Scott Ian of Anthrax. But tonight, like Hamburger, Heidecker works his awkward amateur stand-up routine, complete with mic drops, joyless impersonations, and zone-five airplane humor. Funny! Also: rock ’n’ roll ventriloquist Carla Rhodes.
