Hercules & Love Affair
Disco makes queers and trannies of us all. Take the success of New York art outfit Hercules and Love Affair, whose 2008 single "Blind" became the unlikely crossover hit of this decade. Melding Antony Hegarty's silvery voice with the jangle of DFA-approved beats, DJ Andy Butler created a sexy soundscape that belies disco's saddest truth: The compulsion to dance when you're alone on the floor. You can hear the same aesthetic in their latest DFA compilation Sidetracked, which features raw remixes of Butler's main influences: Italo disco king Gino Soccio and Joe Strummer, sweetly kissed by La Bouche.
