His Girl Friday

(Howard Hawks, 1940). One of the pinnacles of the genre, Hawks’s sparkling screwball comedy is a brilliant remake of The Front Page with a sex change in one of the leading roles that lends a special angle to it. It’s all about the run of anarchy, and to minimize the tension between the play’s melodrama and his own brand of sexual comedy, the director plays the dramatic scenes with incredible speed, thereby reducing their seriousness.
