HOUSE OF CARDS
The game Lotería can best be described as a Mexican version of bingo, but instead of numbers, each card bears a striking image, such as the beautiful sea goddess La Sirena and the ominous La Calavera (a skull). In Mario Alberto Zambrano’s debut novel, Lotería, it’s through this treasured game that the 11-year-old Luz tells us that her mother has disappeared, her big sister is in the ICU, and her father is in jail. But how these things happened is a puzzle for us to figure out. Join Zambrano tonight as he talks about his book and his own Mexican-American upbringing at the recently opened Hullabaloo Books in Crown Heights. Here’s hoping a round of Lotería is involved!
