This is the fifth year of the Brooklyn Country Festival, and what began with a scene rooted in simulation now has a feel of its own. No one here would say they dont take their country seriously, but almost everyone peppers their faithfulness with heavy splashes of humor, especially the Newton Gang (Friday), Alex Battles & the Whisky Rebellion (Saturday), and the Jack Grace Band (Saturday). But the most intriguing artist here isnt terribly funny at all. On Friday, look out for Brownbird Rudy Relic, who describes himself as a vegan straight-edge Chicano blues musician. Add no-fi and eerie to that list. Throw in the (admittedly obscured) Vicente Fernández influence, and it makes for a unique offering in any of the boroughsor states for that matter.
