IMPROV IS FOR SUCKERS

There’s a reason why actor Bill Hader, who plays Stefon, the flamboyant nightlife guru on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” can never keep a straight face when spewing his over-the-top lines about Germfs (German Smurfs) and a club promoter named Gay Liotta. Writer John Mulaney, who created this character with Hader, usually makes changes to the script right before they go on air, leaving an unsuspecting Hader laughing along with everyone watching. Live from New York… A Discussion with the Saturday Night Live Writers takes a look into legendary sketches, behind-the-scenes goofs, and the backstage world of SNL writers with a panel that includes Mulaney, Colin Jost, Marika Sawyer, Erik Kenward, and head writer Seth Meyers.
