Dir. D.W. Griffith (1916). This lavish, delirious exercise in parallel action stacks up four lavish narratives and lets them all come to a simultaneous boil. Griffith lost his original audience (and well as the fortune he made with The Birth of a Nation), but the climax is truly mind-boggling.
