'James Carter's Electric Coltrane'
If any saxophonist has both the technical subtleties to reinvigorate "India" and the lung power to blow some of those oft-referenced sheets of sound, it's this Detroit whirlwind. A recent outdoor gig reminded me just how much rip-snort Carter brings to the bandstand, and his terrorizing of 'Trane's book, especially with a plugged-in guitarist and gospel-soaked organist in tow, should bring the summer heat back to Midtown for one final weekend.
