JAPANORAMA

This year’s eighth annual Japan Cuts, again featuring several collaborations with the New York Asian Film Festival, carries on the event’s tradition of highlighting a broad and revealing cross-section of contemporary Japanese cinema. The 28-film program features selections as varied as a Ken Watanabe-starring remake of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven; Monsterz, the latest thriller from J-horror maestro Hideo Nakata (The Ring, Dark Water); and the mind-bending murder mystery The Snow White Murder Case (July 11), based on a Kanae Minato novel. This evening’s opening-night offerings are equally exciting: Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, Sion Sono’s yakuza action flick, and The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji, the new category-defining work from prolific genre stylist Takashi Miike.
