Whether you fell for her along with Seth Green in Can’t Hardly Wait, or wished you were cool enough to drive a hearse as she did in Six Feet Under, Lauren Ambrose has always stood out in her roles as the offbeat and unabashedly different girl. These days, she may have graduated from orthopedic boots to slinky dresses, but as frontwoman of the Leisure Class, Ambrose still exudes supreme confidence in her originality. Backed by the band, a kind of jazz-age bluegrass outfit, Ambrose belts Dixieland-style covers of everyone from Dylan to Streisand. If you saw her show-stopping Six Feet Under dream sequence of “You Light Up My Life” (as “You Ride Up My Thighs”—a song about pantyhose), you know she’s got the chops to do it.
