Jesse Stacken Trio
It was a hard-driving piece called “The Whip” that made me a Stacken fan a couple years ago. This pianist is smitten by grace, and even the most intricate turns (2012's impressive disc was entitled Bagatelles For Trio) belie their puzzling facades to reveal an inner coordination. Tonight, he’s working with a new cohort of bassist Matt Pavolka and drummer Vinnie Sperrazza, and this is a perfect room to absorb the many nuances they'll invariably put into place.
