JOIN THE FAMILY
If we lived in L.A., we'd never go to the beach. Instead, we'd be too busy hoarding everything at the indie bookstore Family, an underground sensation for its killer selection of books and art by established and up-and-coming artists—really, where else on earth could you buy a pillowcase set with witticisms by Miranda July, a reissue of Werner Herzog's 1974 travel diary Of Walking in Ice, and prints by Thumbsucker director Mike Mills? Family opened a pop-up art and performance space called 30 Days NY a couple of weeks ago, and if you haven't checked them out, it's high time you do before they close May 7. Tonight, they host a symposium on the great crime novelist Charles Willeford with Lawrence Block, Jesse Pearson, Dan Nadel, and Sammy Harkham. Check thirtydaysny.com for information on upcoming events with Gary Panter, Lee Ranaldo, Art Spiegelman, and Shana Moulton. And be sure to check out their exhibit of West Coast artists, including Rodarte, skater Ed Templeton, and rock photographer Autumn de Wilde.
