KNEE JERK REACTION
When Tonya Harding and then-husband Jeff Gillooly hired a goon to break Nancy Kerrigan's leg with a billy club in an ambush attack on January 6, 1994, you could just feel the big bang of sketch comedy and late-night jokes expanding ever-outward from that moment. Thankfully Kerrigan was only bruised, not broken, with no permanent damage. Make no mistake, it was a heinous crime, but more than that an absurd one: girls in sparkly spandex leotards and velvet scrunchies commissioning Godfather-esque hits to take down their rivals. Figure-skating was never so exciting, or dangerous. Tonight Viviana Olen and Matt Harkins throw a party for the launch of their new Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan 1994 Museum (very likely their apartment), an endemically Williamsburg celebration of all things weird, nostalgic, and Nineties. The evening includes a TED-style talk, comedy, exhibits, live music, and a 1994 dance party. We're told you may even encounter a Tonya impersonator or two, so it might be a good idea to wear your kneepads.
