Kobo Town is Drew Gonsalves, a Trinidadian-Canadian raised in Port-of-Spain, calypso's birthplace. Better than Fox or CNN, "calypso don't pretend/ To inform without comment/ Or separate fact from argument." Gonsalves's convincing neo-calypso deepens the music with vintage jazz and dub as he sings about poverty tourism, emigration, and post-9/11 paranoia. It's like '70s Two-Tone politi-ska but with an even more subversive lilt.
