Philip Glass’s score for director Godfrey Reggio's 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi might not be one of the minimalist composer’s stronger works, but the piece is certainly among his most important, launching a Hollywood career that would bring his idiosyncratic, meandering motifs closer to mainstream audiences than any of his previous projects. Tonight, the New York Philharmonic will perform the accompaniment to the film, a striking collection of time-lapse natural and urban imagery with embedded environmental overtones.
