A mix of homemade bedroom pop, Springsteen sentiment, fuzzed-out guitars, an almost-underwater aesthetic, and songs that can be as lengthy and densely packed as this sentence, Kurt Vile somehow makes FM rock both elliptical and accessible. His live shows are like jam sessions sans the pass-the-joint-and-guitar mentality, often sprawling into sound effects-addled abstraction. Especially when the Violators are there to coax his murmur to a growl and give depth to the disorienting dreaminess, Kurt Vile is a songsmith worth seeing in action. MADGES
