Here's a sweet double bill for fans of arty guitar rock that never privileges texture at the expense of groove. England's Fujiya & Miyagi have been operating at the fringes of the international indie scene since the early part of this decade, but last year's Lightbulbs—their first album with a live drummer—made a strong case for wider renown; like me, these guys appear to have spent long hours pondering what Spoon would sound like as a DIY disco act. School of Seven Bells are former Secret Machines dude Ben Curtis's new group with twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, familiar to some from their days fronting On!Air!Library; on Alpinisms, their recent debut, the trio layers creamy harmony vocals and thick post-shoegaze guitars over appealingly clinical math-funk beats.
