LO-FI IN THE BIG TIME
When you really ponder it (and, come on, its Octoberwhat else is there to ponder?), this strange yet wonderful Madison Square Garden lineup satisfies every part of the psyche. Wavves, spazzy San Diegan Nathan Williamss lo-fi outfit, is pure surf-punk thrash that fully abets the pleasure principle (the id). Dirty Projectors, the freewheeling experimental composers and Björk collaborators, are far-sighted, nuanced intellectuals in full grasp of the ego. And Phoenix, those French barnstormers, aimed for perfection with last years wonderfully giddy, infectious Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, andguess what?they get it (thanks, superego).
