Lolita

(Stanley Kubrick, 1962). Kubrick's ambitious but uneven black comedy screen version of Nabokov's novel is miscast in the title role—sweet sixteen Sue Lyon is a few years too old for the role of irresistible nymphet. The tacky American landscape, an essential element of the book, is missing—the movie was shot in England, and looks it. But James Mason makes up for a lot—he's superb as Humbert.
