Lovers+My Gay Banjo
It's difficult to label yourself as a "loud and proud queercore" trio without becoming a sketch from Portlandia. Portland's Lovers (made up of friends Carolyn Berk, Kerby Ferris and Emily Kingan) counter stereotypes with dark-edged pop tunes fraught with vulnerability that come across as a less wounded Tegan & Sara. On this year's Dark Light, romance builds as a slow burn with a synthesizer soundtrack. Supporting the band is the boy-girl duo My Gay Banjo, whose cheery folk is exactly as titled. With Air Waves.
