Luck By Chance
(Zoya Akhtar, 2009).
Ms. Akhtar's entertaining directorial debut is set in the cutthroat world of Hindi films, the Bollywood dream factory. The director's hunky brother, Faran Akhtar, plays the lead, in the role of an innocent youth from New Delhi who comes to Bombay in order to make it as a movie star who soon learns how to work the system to his advantage. His understated performance holds this many-stranded picture together and he manages to be sympathetic, even when breaking hearts. Bollywoodophiles will relish the ridiculously elaborate and circusy song and dance numbers.
