In 2009, two EPs—the first self-titled, the second Of Light—primed Planet Earth for Shabazz Palaces, an interstellar avant-rap duo led by Ishmael Butler, the man once known as Butterfly from the Digable Planets but who now answers to Palaceer Lazaro. After leaving his former Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) crew, Butler ditched Brooklyn for Seattle but held onto his penchant for head-bobbing beats, dense lyrics, and overlong titles. Peep Shabazz's "Swerve . . . The Reaping of All That Is Worthwhile (Noir Not Understanding)" for all of the above, then catch them live at S.O.B's at midnight.
