Madame Bovary

Dir. Vincente Minnelli (1949). There have been three film incarnations of Gustave Flaubert's novel. Against all odds, both French versions turned out duds, and Minnelli's stylish Hollywood MGM version proved an admirable success, with a rare sensitivity to its source. The stunning ball sequence is a moment of great cinema. Jennifer Jones acquits herself with the requisite star quality and intensity in the title role.
