Mario Pavone Quartet
The bassist invariably provides his squads with natty, inside-out tunes to interpret. Regardless of how wooly the action gets, an essence of swing buoys the momentum. This newish band is populated by some oldish pals, and the horn blend of feisty Tony Malaby and fertile Dave Ballou is a match not heard since the heyday of the old Internet Café shows. August Stone curator Tyshawn Sorey demonstrates his versatility on drums tonight at the Stone and tomorrow night at Cornelia Street. The Arc plays with Tom Rainey at the traps.
