Mario Pavone's Orange Double Tenor
The bassist's vivid freebop is often brawnyfor such a nice guy, he's got a little hockey player in him. But the push 'n' shove tack is tempered by an overt lyrical side that he encourages his cohorts to express as well. That might mean the premiere of his Arc Suite: T/PI T/PO, commissioned by Chamber Music America and designed to conjure the "energy and ethos" of '60s stalwarts such as Taylor, 'Trane, and Mingus, has just as much grace as it does gumption. One thing's certain: this is a mighty sextet.
