In order to gauge the depth of this mercurial pianist's approach, it's best to see him in action. His hands fly in a Tatum-esque tumble, bringing all sorts of delicious filigree to tunes. As he works his magic, the thematic whimsy for which he's revered becomes obvious--at 83 years old, Solal is still keen enough to be one of the most reliable dazzlers in jazz. This rare visit from Paris, in duet with the agile bassist Francois Moutin, is an event.
