In the past two months, three musicians have felt the need to tell me that Mat Maneri is the heaviest improviser around. It's tough to say for sure, but there's no question that the violist’s work teems with imagination: From solo excursions to small group extravaganzas, he arrives at some truly fetching stuff. His Thanksgiving game plan is unique, utilizing only tuba, voice, and viola. And as a bonus, he’s invited his mom to sing a few notes.
