Chan Marshall hasn’t released a new Cat Power album since 2008’s Jukebox, her second set (after 2000’s The Covers Record) of low-and-slow indie-blues remakes. A recent post on Matador Records’ site says that neither the singer nor the label “have forgotten the matter” of a new record; indeed, late-winter shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles (where Marshall evidently lives these days) included a smattering of fresh material. Whether or not she unveils any work in progress tonight, expect to hear music you haven’t quite before: Onstage Marshall often re-imagines her own songs more radically than she does others’.
