Dir. Todd Haynes (2011). It worked as TV; my hunch is that Haynes 5 ½ hour James M. Cain adaptation, a domestic drama with intimations of historical tragedy, will be no less effective on the screen. This saga of unrequited star worship, terminal class envy, failed self-empowerment, and self-immolating smother love is a nightmare as American as Mom and apple pie.
