The Coen Brothers are genius for making a horrifying situation (e.g., kidnapping a baby) hilariously endearing. In Raising Arizona (1987), their second feature film, Joel and Ethan Coen cast Nicolas Cage in the role of the hapless criminal H.I., who makes his wife’s dream of having a baby come true by stealing one from a set of quintuplets. Cage is so phenomenal in the role that it’s tough to imagine the Coens’s first pick was . . . Kevin Costner? Of course, it didn’t hurt Cage’s performance that the cast included Holly Hunter, Frances McDormand, and John Goodman. The kidnapping happens again tonight in McCarren Park and also features musical performances by Dustin Wong (Ponytail), Tim Harrington (Les Savy Fav), and Talk Normal.
