Monika

(Ingmar Bergman, 1953). This bittersweet study of a doomed youthful love affair was shot in the summer of 1952 when Bergman and leading lady Harriet Anderson (who gives an assured performance in her first major role) were romantically involved, which may have contributed to its strong erotic charge. It's the only film in which the director has successfully portrayed working-class characters.
