Murmur of the Heart
Dir. Louis Malle (1971). One of Malle's best films, this truthful and tender semi-autobiographical work set in Dijon in 1954, during the Vietnamese war, is a coming-of-age story in which 15-year-old Laurent (marvelously played by Benoit Ferreux) attempts to lose his virginity in the face of a tight bourgeois family. The period is captured with loving detail and Lea Massari is radiant as Laurent's pretty young mother, who is having a few sexual problems of her own.
