Night and the City
(Jules Dassin, 1950). Dassin's over-the-top mise-en-scene turns all of London into a giant expressionist trap for con man Richard Widmark, victim of his own schemes, in this darkest of noirs. There is excellent support from the marvelous Googie Withers and Francis L. Sullivan as an oily nightclub owner.
