Dir. Jacques Tourneur (1956). Directed by Jacques Tourneur from a David Goodis novel, Nightfall is a nifty late noir and a model of economical filmmaking—heavy on sudden danger and instant love. “You’re the most wanted man I know” the young, sultry Anne Bancroft tells beleaguered Aldo Ray. The cocktail lounge pickup is adroitly staged, the action climax expertly choreographed and there’s a fashion show set piece worthy of Hitch.
