Fela Kuti made it to Broadway, and he also lives on in Ann Arbor. Afro-beat ensemble Nomo (not to be confused with the New Wave outfit of "Red Lipstick" fame) began in 2003 as a collective of University of Michigan music grads and Fela fans, but has since ballooned to well over 50 rotating members, six albums (most on indie Ubiquity Records), and an expressive, multifarious funk-greets-traditional groove. New Tones (2006) remains a thing of wonderful, bright beauty.
