NONE LESS BLACK
Chilly Chicago black-metal buzzkills Nachtmystium made the best extreme-metal album of the year, period. But considering that the black-metal model for success has always been do the exact same thing every year, but meaner, its shocking they didnt get run out of the scene. Assassins: Black Meddle, Part 1 has all the icy luster, gargled misanthropy, and slow-grinding death-slog youd expect, but tempers it with a giant inflatable pigs worth of art-rock Meddle-ing in the Pink Floyd vein. And that barely scratches the colorful surface of their drunken sing-alongs, saxophone solos, piano-and-noise duets, Isis-styled slow-burners, and cosmic electronics shooting squiggly lines into space. A truly righteous bill all around, Nachtmystium is joined by an excellent selection of doom bandsPhilly bong-rippers Javelina, New Yorks microtonal Bloody Panda, and the truly terrifying Velniasas well as local black-metal mutants Malkuth.
