Goapele is an intriguing soulstress: a woman of composed swagger, sharp street style, and a dainty lilt to match neither. But her sweet voice speaks to an element of control, and the Oakland, California, artist displays much more of it on the sexy "Milk & Honey," the title track of her fourth album. Urgent synths and an occasional flicker of Auto-Tune add to the unusual overall portrait: a mechanized soul singer, and one whose name means, fittingly, "to move forward" in Setswana.
