The dusky-voiced songbird of pre-revolutionary Cuba's emotionally ravishing "feeling" sound was brilliantly retrofitted into the revolutionary-in-its-own-way Buena Vista Social Club in 1996. Portuondo, who turns 80 later this year, still sounds bigger than life. Pianist Robert Fonseca, who has also performed with the BVSC, is a rhythmically persuasive player thoroughly imbued with the Afro-Cuban spirit who also rambles into Bulgarian and Brazilian territory.
