ON A ROLL
This is opening day for the Gotham Girls, the skater-operated flat-track roller league started in 2003 that went on to become a founding member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. There are four teams (the Brooklyn Bombshells, Manhattan Mayhem, Bronx Gridlock, and, our own personal favorite, the Queens of Pain) plus three traveling inter-league competition teams. These ladies are well-conditioned and play to win—as their mission statement phrases it, "the strong, diverse, and independent women from the world's biggest, baddest city"—but this is no take-your-head-off free-for-all. The Gotham Girls are a certified nonprofit organization, whose skaters, referees, and other volunteers are in it for the fun and excitement. See what fun and excitement it is when the Gridlock and Bombshells hit the rink tonight to kick off the 2010 season.
