ON THE BEATBOX
Just Blaze, house producer at Jay-Z and Dame Dash’s Roc-A-Fella, changed the sound of hip-hop, bringing back soul samples at a time when keyboards were hot and used vinyl was piling up around the city. Although he could make the song cry with tracks like “Soon You’ll Understand” and “Mom Praying,” Just Blaze is still best known for his bangers, club tracks like Dipset’s “I Really Mean It” and Freeway’s “Flipside.” And with the recent “Higher,” he’s made another great one, teaming up with of-the-moment EDM producer Baauer to produce a nearly six-minute rollercoaster of falling synths, echoings drums, and drops from his old boss Jay. Tonight, the two team up again to rock Webster Hall’s weekly Girls & Boys party. With Alex English and reKLES.
