ONE IF BY BIKE
We all know about Washington crossing the Delaware, but he actually made it to Brooklyn and took on the British in August 1776, in the first battle after the colonies made their Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately, the young general was defeated, but he made a brilliant escape and went on to a pretty illustrious career. You can trace the route on The Battle of Brooklyn Revolutionary War Ride, a 55-mile tour sponsored by the Five Borough Bicycle Club, which takes you through Prospect Park, down Flatbush Road (as it was known then) to the Gowanus Canal and across to Brooklyn Heights. Knowledgeable guides will lead you to the sites of key locations such as the Red Lion Inn, where the first shots were fired.
