One Wonderful Sunday
Dir. Akira Kurosawa (1947). This contemporary tale concerns the alternately whimsical and despairing adventures of an impoverished young couple as they wander through a postwar Tokyo marked by the presence of war orphans and ruined buildings. They find romantic magic when he tries to conduct a symphony in an abandoned band shell. If not major Kurosawa, this sweet, uncomplicated story is a work of considerable charm.
