New York Times media reporter David Carr once opined that adding a paywall to the newspaper’s website was not, in fact, like drilling holes in their boat, but rather, closer to “installing a new engine.” As journalism departs from its pulpy, inked medium and finds a pixilated home in cyberspace, the field’s future remains foggy. But Carr is hopeful, depicting the Internet as a kind of self-correcting feedback loop that moves toward the truth. Tonight at Perspectives: What is the Future of the Media?, Carr, along with the equally optimistic Stephen B. Shepard, dean of CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, will debate the endless possibilities with Daily Beast writer Peter Beinart.
