Two things are true about the pianist's working groups: He likes his sax players to be both feisty and inquisitive, and he doesn't take the stand without a very demonstrative rhythm section. The logic is on the surface: Evans is one of the most aggressive mainstreamers we've got, and he needs foils who are up for some storming. With wily tenor man John Ellis up front, and Ben Williams and Obed Calvaire powering behind, sparks will fly. The club, a key Manhattan jazz venue, is recovering from a sprinkler system flood; it's a great weekend for them to expect a packed house.
