On the new …It Was Beauty the pianist does the bump with Ornette through the Lower Ninth and milks an Andraé Crouch heavenly pledge for some true spirituality. His breadth is always close to his heart, and pushing and shoving becomes a fine art in Evans’s work, making the case for tension being a creative act. This week he rocks both trio and quintet gigs (as well as a Tuesday hit by the redunkulously feisty Tarbaby band). Methinks return visits will reveal more and more of his scope.
Sept. 5-8, 7:30 & 9:30 p.m., 2013
