It's a collectively-run band that began under Dave Holland's knowing eye. The sad fact that the esteemed bassist had to bow out of this week's gigs to address a family medical emergency doesn't mean they'll be off kilter, though. Two reasons: sub Larry Grenadier is a lithe string player whose lines are almost as architectural as Holland's, and addressing the dynamics of instant interplay (the band's essence, for sure) is his strong suit. The melodic webs that saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Eric Harland, and recent Voice Jazz Poll-topping pianist Jason Moran generate should give the newcomer a chance to get his wiggle on. They really know how to build a maze, with each taking a different path to the center.
