The Godmother of Punk is getting her due this year with the widespread release of a documentary about her career as a poet and musician, Patti Smith: Dream of Life. Nevertheless, it's business as usual for Smith, who is performing her now-regular New Year's concerts. Usually barefoot, Smith is a natural for capturing the metaphysics of the moment without sacrificing her classic music's edge. Now in her 60s, Smith is still uncontrollably ebullient onstage, and her band, which still includes her '70s cohorts guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, match her energy perfectly.
