Fans of lovey-dovey drums-and-organ pop have been counting on Mates of State for over a decade now, and that's a responsibility the married duo evidently take very seriously: Although Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel have two daughters under the age of six—check out Gardner's Babble.com blog, Band on the Diaper Run, for plenty of backstage-with-the-kids pix—they still tour like footloose twentysomethings, bringing their ebullient dual-vocal jams to some of the most devoted audiences in Indieland. (Much respect to anyone willing to put up with as many airplane-changing tables as Gardner and Hammel surely have.) The Mates' most recent full-length, Re-Arrange Us, came out in 2008; according to their Twitter, its follow-up is "over halfway done."
