Japanese noise legend Merzbow teams up with the American avant-goth outfit Xiu Xiu for a formidable double bill perfect for your Kings of Leonloving cousin who's in town for the weekend and wants to check out something truly edgy. Last year, the insanely prolific Merzbow released a 13-disc box set, 13 Japanese Birds, with some wonderfully straightforward titles illustrating the artist's commitment to animal-rights issues: "Bird Killer Governor Ishihara Deserves to Die," for instance, as well as "Once the Human Meat Is Done, Cut It Up and Mix With the Vegetable Curry." Xiu Xiu's latest, Dear God, I Hate Myself, is no less provocative, though its cover of the folk standard "Cumberland Gap" is surprisingly lovely.
